Leatherface, like every other horror icon, keeps getting reinvented. Which I love, as long as it’s done right. The new prequel to the Tobe Hooper classic will follow the mentally ill icon as he escapes a mental hospital, kidnaps a young nurse and sets off to “raise hell”.

The prequel is being produced by Christa Campbell (A Nightmare On Elm Street 2) Lati Grobman and Carl Mazzocone whom all exec. produced the highly successful Texas Chainsaw 3D. The prequel is also being produced by Les Weldon and executive produced by Millennium’s Avi Lerner, Trevor Short, Boaz Davidson, John Thompson, Mark Gill and Beth Bruckner O’Brien. Julien Maury and Alexandre Bustillo (The duo behind the 2007 critically-acclaimed Inside) will direct and Stephen Dorff (Blade), Sam Coleman (Game Of Thrones), Sam Strike (Stitches), James Bloor (Hansel and Gretel), Angela Bettis (Girl Interrupted, Carrie) and Lili Taylor (The Conjuring) will star.
Angela Bettis’s character in this prequel will be Mother Sawyer and Dourff’s “a lean, mean Texas Ranger who has a vendetta against the teen boy who grows up to become Leatherface.”
Here’s Stephen Dorff in character
During an interview the filmmakers had with BD they revealed the prequel’s current production status “Lionsgate will release the movie but no official date so far,” Then revealed a quick sneak peak as to what to expect “It’s a brutal and nihilistic road movie that we hope will surprise and delight the fans…“ The duo isn’t stopping there though. They plan on staying within the genre even after Leatherface is released “More horror, maybe, but more genre for sure! We’d like to explore a lot of sub-genre that we love as an audience; a creature feature, a ghost story, a zombie flick, fantasy, scifi, etc.”
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre franchise was built off of Tobe Hooper’s and Kim Henkel’s first film which was release in 1974. The film was banned outright in several countries and many theaters after backlash from the public claiming the film was too violent. Despite the mixed reactions from the public, the film went on to make $30.8 million at the domestic box office with a $300,000 budget and since gained a reputation as one of the best cinema horror films. Chainsaw went to spawn 3 sequels, a remake with two continuations and soon to be a prequel to the original film which I wrote about above. The franchise followed the chainsaw wielding slasher Leatherface as he tracked down whom ever trespassed on his family’s property.
