Star Wars: The Force Awakens star John Boyega has joined the cast of Steven S. DeKnight’s Pacific Rim 2. Boyega will be playing the son of Idris Elba’s character from the first film, according to Variety.
Guillermo del Toro, who created the world in the original 2013 film with Travis Beacham, will be serving as producer along with Mary Parent, Thomas Tull, Jon Jashni and Upper Room Productions. Cale Boyter will be executively producing.
“I am proud and happy to welcome John into a fantastic sandbox. The ‘Pacific Rim’ universe will be reinforced with him as a leading man as it continues to be a multicultural, multi-layered world.” Del Toro said. “The World saving the world’ was our goal and I couldn’t think of a better man for the job.”

Boyega will co-star along with returning cast members Charlie Hunnam, Ron Perlman and Max Martini.
