Fact VS. Fiction: The Real ‘Cocaine Bear’ Case VS. The Movie
Director Elizabeth Banks’ (“The Boys”) new insane film, Cocaine Bear, is now in theaters, and the GBI agents involved with the real case have spoken out about the true events. The movie finds an oddball group of cops, criminals, tourists, and teens converging in a Georgia forest where a 500-pound predator has ingested a staggering amount of cocaine and gone on a coke-fueled rampage for more blow … and blood. What you might not know about the movie is that a true story inspired it. The event took place in Kentucky in 1985. A botched drug smuggling attempt left many one-pound packages of cocaine scattered about the Chattahoochee National Forest. A bear consumed some of those packages. The bear, named “Pablo Escobear” (named after the drug kingpin Pablo Escobar), died as a result. “It’s kind of surprising to me that they’re going to make a movie about it,” former agent Paul Loggins said in a 2021 interview with the Herald-Leader

True Crime Documentary ‘Lovely Jackson’ Premiering At Justice Film Festival
A few months ago, I sat down to talk with ex-death row inmate Rickey Jackson about his 39-year stint in prison for a crime he did not commit and the documentary Lovely Jackson, set to premiere this March at the Justice Film Festival, which chronicles his life and his fight for justice. Matt Waldek directed this elegant, emotionally charged documentary. He joined Rickey and me for the interview to discuss directing Lovely Jackson, his relationship with Rickey, and how Rickey was freed. And it’s an amazing story. Rickey was convicted of murder while just a teen and sentenced to death before his sentence was commuted to life in prison three years later. He spent the next 39 years fighting for his freedom. You see, Rickey was innocent, and the only thing that tied him to the crime was a lie told by a 12-year-old boy, who eventually recanted his statement. Rickey was convicted without evidence and even had a witness

Shorts Reviews: TWO SISTERS, THE MEAN SPIRITED, and UNREEL (Romford Horror Festival)
Two Sisters Italian short Two Sisters is a period piece horror with folk horror elements. Set in the late 15th century in the Lessini Mountains of Verona, writer/director Diego Carli’s film involves the titular siblings (Jenni Tatani and Marianna Caporalito in marvelous performances) being pursued by a group of men hunting for witches. The teen girls have good reason to hide, and they do so using magical powers. When they come under attack, a horrifically violent event occurs, and the two sisters find their close bond being challenged. Carli invests his short with incredible detail, from researching facts around that time period’s height of witch hunting to costumes and recreating authenticity of the sets and outdoor shots on display. Cinematographer Edoardo Olivieri beautifully captures the proceedings, with Luigi Maria Mennella’s score providing perfect musical accompaniment. The Mean Spirited Codirectors Jack Archer (who wrote the screenplay) and Joseph Archer deliver a very special work with their U.K. short The Mean Spirited.
