Garai spoke with Arrow Video FrightFest press staff for this syndicated review in anticipation of the event. AMULET will receive its UK premiere at FrightFest’s Halloween event. Excited or what? So excited! It’s a great honour to have our UK premiere at such a brilliantly subversive festival. We are very grateful! You’re most well known as an actress but have you always wanted to write and direct films? I’ve been writing since my teens but it wasn’t until my late 20’s that I realized I wanted to direct as well and I made my short film SCRUBBER. Now what I’d love is to write, direct and act. Never all three together though! What was the writing process like? Were there any major inspirations and motivations that drove you? I was very

Supernatural Horror ‘Amulet’ Arrives On DVD The October

Golden Globe-nominated writer-director Romola Gari‘s highly acclaimed supernatural horror film Amulet is heading to DVD and On Demand this October, from Magnet Releasing. Following an accident that leaves him homeless in London, former soldier Tomaz is brought to the rotting home of Magda, a lonely woman in desperate need of help as she looks after her dying mother. Though at first resistant, Magda eventually welcomes him into their lives and allows him to help her care for them. But as he worms his way into their routine and begins to fall for Magda, Tomaz starts to notice strange, unexplainable, and ugly phenomena. Something seems very wrong with the mysterious old woman who never leaves the top floor, and Magda may in fact be enslaved to do her otherworldly bidding. Carla Juri, Alec Secareanu, Imelda Staunton, and Angeliki Papoulia star in Amulet (review) releasing on October 20, 2020.

Movie Review: Amulet

Every once in a while, I come across a movie the leaves me speechless. As I sat down today to watch Amulet I thought I had some idea of what to expect. I was wrong. Where to start? I guess the premise would be a good place. Amulet is the debut feature from Romola Garai and follows Tomas (Alec Secareanu), a homeless ex-soldier, suffering from PTSD and heavy guilt. He meets a nun who arranges a place for him to stay, with a young woman (Carla Juri) whose mother is sick and living in the attic. But not everything is what as it seems to be. Normally, I do my best to avoid giving out spoilers, but to work through this film, I need to reveal a few things. To avoid spoilers stop reading this review now. The first half of the movie is a SLOW burn. But at the halfway mark things go off the rails and morphs into

South Korea’s Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival Takes a Hybrid Approach to Horror for 2020

South Korea’s Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival (BIFAN) — Asia’s largest genre film fest — will take what it calls a hybrid approach for its July 9–16 run. Because of COVID-19 concerns, the fest will screen 174 features and short films from 42 countries on cinema screens, and offer 69 of those movies on a Korean online platform. According to the fest’s official website, “BIFAN 2020 would like to present the blueprint for future film festivals: a ‘hybrid’ film festival that keeps pace with the changing media environment, a festival that effectively combines offline and online events . . . Overseas directors who cannot travel to Korea will be meeting audiences by introducing their films and giving talks online.” As always, BIFAN is offering a treasure trove of intriguing horror films. Here are five that I am looking forward to watching at the fest, with program notes from the official BIFAN site. Amulet Tomaz is a homeless man in London
