While a film’s soundtrack may not be at the forefront of films, it should be. Music is the heartbeat of a film, controlling pace and emotion. Timothy Williams, a composer, has created many of those melodies heard in films such as Get Out, IT, Guardians of the Galaxy, and Deadpool 2. I sat down with Williams to talk about one of his most recent projects, creating the scores for James Gunn’s new film Brightburn, part superhero movie, part horror film. In the film, a couple (Elizabeth Banks and David Denman) adopt a baby from another world. They raise the boy (Jackson A. Dunn) to use his powers for good, but evil begins to grow within him. Written by James Gunn and Mark Gunn, Brightburn takes over theaters on May 24, 2019, from Sony Pictures. Andy Grush and Taylor Newton Stewart Netflix new series “The Haunting of Hill House” is set to premiere on October 12th. Ahead of the premiere, I sat down with The Newton Brothers, the duo responsible for the haunting scores that bring the series’ haunting atmosphere to life. Andy Grush and Taylor Newton Stewart (aka The Newton Brothers) are very distinguished composers working on films such as Gerald’s Game, Open Water 3: Cage Dive, Ouija: Origins of Evil, Before I Wake, Hush, and Oculus. Horror Fuel: “How did you get into composing for films and series?” Taylor: “I started writing music for shorts back in high school for college students. That led me to assist for other composers, I worked for Hans Zimmer for a bit and several different composers. I did what I had to do, make copies, get coffee, record stuff, help write stuff. Recently, I was scrolling down my Facebook feed and came across a music video that caught my attention. The video had a real Tim Burton feel and a unique sound. I decided I had to track down the musician, Tommy Spase, hear more of his music and find out more about him. I reached out to Tommy and he sat down with me for an interview. Horror Fuel: “How long have you been with the band?” Tommy Spase: “The first incarnation of the band was about seven years ago. We played around LA for a while until a couple of members left and we got a couple more. That was over the course of like six years. I had been working on a children’s show but decided to get back into the music side of it. That’s how that video came across your news feed. Horror in the 80’s gave us so many fantastic soundtracks. One song still stands out above the rest, ‘Cry Little Sister’ from the beloved classic The Lost Boys. As the film approached its 30th anniversary we shared the news with you that the song’s creator G Tom Mac (also known as Gerard McMahon) was not only doing a special tour but that he is also gearing up to bring us “A Lost Boys Story” musical, inspired by the movie. ‘Cry Little Sister’ is just one of the many contributions G Tom Mac has made to the world. Besides being a fantastic musician, he has created over 150 themes and tracks for both films and series. If you’ve seen The Lost Boys, Trick ‘r Treat, Terminator III, or the series ‘Charmed’, ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’, or ‘The X-Files’ you have heard his music.
