Writer/director/producer John Carpenter is a true master of horror. He’s a legend with films like Halloween, Escape from New York, They Live, and many others to his credit. Carpenter is known for being blunt when it comes to his opinion. Recently he was featured on the WTF Podcast, hosted by Marc Maron. During the broadcast the two discussed many things, but one comment stood out. It is reference to AMC’s hit zombie series The Walking Dead, which will begin its seventh season this Fall. It seems Mr. Carpenter really dislikes the show, in fact he basically called it a rip-off of George A. Romero’s Night of the Living Dead. [The Walking Dead] was a movie that George Romero made back in 1968. And they have milked that, and they are still milking that.” Romero’s Night of the Living Dead did give life to the modern zombie genre, but the film and series are two different things. Earlier this year I reported that Cameron Romero is making a prequel to his father’s 1968 cult classic ‘Night of the Living Dead’. Since the article was published C. Romero has finished his successful crowd funding campaign for ‘Night of the Living Dead: Origins’. The film has now gone into pre-production. Cameron Romero had this to say: “Origins’ is a great opportunity for me to continue the family tradition of creating haunting and ever-evolving depictions of the undead, and a great opportunity for Romero fans to see a story of zombie inception never portrayed before,” Cameron and George Romero C. Romero wrote the screenplay along with Darrin Reed and Bryce C. Campbell. C. Romero will also be directing the project. Ted Field (The Amityville Horror and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre reboots) will produce along with Aldo LaPietra, Bryce C. Campbell, Darrin Reed and Romero. Mike Weber and Thomas van Dell will serve as executive producers for Radar. ‘Origins’ is currently

Writer/director Roger Conners’ has been quietly making a reboot of George A. Romero’s ‘Night of the Living Dead. In fact, the movie is already half through filming and he plans to wrap up in May. Conners is aiming to make the modern version of the 1968 zombie movie. Conners is making some big changes to the original Romero script, including changing the sex of some characters and even the sexual orientation of others, for instance in ‘Rebirth’ Barbra is a man. This indie zombie movie stars Aswan Harris, Rachel Anderson, Alvin Hudson, Bradley Arner, RJ Messenger and Taylor Nelms. I have a feeling this movie won’t be received well by a lot of the fans of Romero’s Night of the Living Dead, but who knows, it may bring a new group of horror fans into the zombie genre.
