“Women in Horror Spotlight”: Kathryn Bigelow

Odds are that if you are familiar with director/producer/writer Kathryn Bigelow it will be for her Drama/Thriller pieces like K-19: The Widowmaker (2002) starring Harrison Ford and Liam Neeson, or for her outstanding work on The Hurt Locker (2008) for which she was the first woman to win an Academy Award for Best Director, she won the Directors Guild of America Award for Outstanding Directing, she won the BAFTA Award for Best Direction, and she also earned the Critics Choice Award for Best Director. (This is on top of the awards that the film won on its own.) She is also the directorial force behind the recent blockbuster, Zero Dark Thirty (2012). The reason why Bigelow has earned a nod here is due to a western horror film she wrote and directed in 1987 towards the beginning of her career. There are many places we instantly recognize in horror films, but have you ever wondered where the locations actually are? This article will shed light on a few of those mysteries locations. ‘Session 9’ was filmed at the Danvers State Hospital. The creepy hospital has been demolished since the filming of ‘Session 9’. If you want to explore the hospital’s grounds head to Danvers, Massachusetts and find 450 Maple Street. Palisades High School, where ‘Carrie’ demolished a gym and massacred everyone at the prom. Besides being the location for the original film ‘Carrie’, the school is a little creepy due to a real life mystery. In the 1980’s a student was murdered on the school grounds and her killer was never caught. The School is located at 15777 Bowdin Street, Pacific Palisades, CA. Graffiti Artist JPS Leaves His Mark On The World

Some people see graffiti as nothing more than low brow, illegal, acts of vandalism on the walls of buildings, however there are many who see it as form of self expression. I belong to the later, I see graffiti as works of art. There are few graffiti artists as good as the artist simply known as JPS. When walking the streets of the U.K., you are likely to come across one of JPS’ masterpieces. His pieces frequently include figures from horror movies, while others contain humor and puns and musicians, such as Eminem and Notorious B.I.G. or cartoons. His canvas ranges from walls, rocks, signs, pretty much anything he can paint. JPS also now sells small pieces on Ebay. JPS is quoted as saying “…just trying to leave my mark on the world” and man has he ever. He’s earned quite a following. His artwork is even showing up in the background of commercials, like the one in the commercial
