Most of you have heard of Japan’s notorious Aokigahara forest, often referred to as the “Suicide Forest’ . The fourteen square miles of Forest at the base Mount Fuji is a popular site for people to commit suicide. On average 100 bodies are recovered from the Forest every year. The suicides have become such an issue that the government has put signs urging people not to take their lives. Locals claim to forest is filled with spirits.
The area is the central setting for the supernatural-thriller ‘The Forest’. The film stars Taylor Kinney (Zero Dark Thirty) and ‘Game of Thrones’ actress Natalie Dormer, who plays a twin whose sister disappears into the “Suicide Forest”. Dormer’s character travels to Japan in search of her sister. She enters Aokigahara, guided by Aiden (Kinney) and faces the tormented souls of those who committed suicide there.
Jason Zada directed the film, written by David S, Goyer, Ben Ketai, Nick Antosca and Sarah Cornwell. ‘The Forest’ will debut in theaters on January 8th.
