The official poster and teaser trailer have been unveiled for ‘Winchester’ and teases the darkness of the real-life inspired tale of Sarah Winchester.
Winchester, written and directed by Micheal and Peter Spierig, follows the story of firearm heiress Sarah Winchester played by Oscar-winning actress Helen Mirren. Sarah was convinced that she was haunted by the souls killed at the hands of the Winchester Repeating Rifle.
“On an isolated stretch of land 50 miles outside of San Francisco sits the most haunted house in the world. Built by Sarah Winchester (Mirren), heiress to the Winchester fortune, it is a house that knows no end. Constructed in an incessant twenty-four hour a day, seven day a week mania for decades, it stands seven stories tall and contains hundreds of rooms.
To the outsider, it looks like a monstrous monument to a disturbed woman’s madness. But Sarah is not building for herself, for her niece (Sarah Snook) or for the brilliant Doctor Eric Price (Jason Clarke) whom she has summoned to the house. She is building a prison, an asylum for hundreds of vengeful ghosts, and the most terrifying among them have a score to settle with the Winchesters…”
Sarah Winchester is quite a remarkable woman, and the idea of her being just a crazy person who was haunted by ghosts is not the full story,” Peter Spierig said. “Helen Mirren, in particular, I think is great in portraying that.”
In real-life, after Sarah consulted a medium who told her she would survive as long as her home was being built, she began construction on The Winchester Mystery House in 1884. After 38 years of construction, the 7-story, 24,000-square-foot home has a staggering 160 rooms. There are stairs that lead nowhere, doors that open into walls, and other curious features. The house, which is now open to the public and is still considered one of the most haunted homes in America, will actually be featured in the film which will open in theaters on February 23, 2018.
