The Collector’s Series of 1999’s Candyman 3: Day of the Dead has just been released. The question is, should you buy it?
The film opens with a young woman, Caroline (Donna D’Errico) unhappy with the way a gallery owner is presenting the art by her ancestor, Daniel Robitaille, who became known as the legendary Candyman. His great, great, granddaughter also wants people to see him for who he was, a gifted artist. However, when she is pushed into calling his name by the gallery owner, her romantic notions of the artist give way to the horror of who he has become, a supernatural killer. This all begins just days before the Day of the Dead, the day that is celebrated as a day to honor the dead.
While you can tell the movie was made in the ’90s, before special effects and camera quality reached today’s standards, it’s still entertaining. And is still is heavily connected to its predecessors story-wise, while having a bit of a freshness thanks to the fact that it heavily involves the Day of the Dead.
At its heart, it’s about family, and facing your heritage, the same themes are featured in every Candyman movie. It also still has the gore we have come to expect from the franchise. While it is a tad cheesy, it is still entertaining and it’s worth having. The fantastic art on the box is worth it alone.
The Blu-ray has a lot of killer special features.
