In a secret Government lab, Dr. Goodbody (legendary Scream Queen Brinke Stevens) conducts mind reading experiments that result in all manner of horny goings-on (the best kind, if we are being honest) before we cut to an opening title sequence highlighting some whimsical-ass music accompanied by PS1-level graphics…
Thus begins Bret McCormick’s 1998 sci-fi farce Repligator, the only way it could… and will again!
Following that we travel through more Government labs where all-manner of high-tech gadgets are being worked on involving everything from x-ray glasses to brain-washing to teleportation… and about that last bit; any that goes through the device comes through as an incredibly beautiful, totally horny (there’s that word again), woman (unless they are already an “ugly” woman… then they come out like the nerdy chick that gets “prom hot” in an 80’s teen comedy)!!
Speaking of one of those newly-minted women, well… she ends up having sex after which she becomes a half-alligator/half-human hybrid, and her partner becomes a gay zombie… and then most of the base become dinosaur-men… but not before that opening sequence with Stevens is shown again…
Trust me, it only gets more insane as it goes on…
As you may have guessed, Repligator is completely out of control for most of it’s 85 minute run-time, and that is a wickedly wonderful thing as this film gives zero fucks where logic is concerned, but instead is much more interested in mutants, madmen, and mammaries… oh so many mammaries… and early CG lasers… and that’s before we even mention the deliriously charming Borscht Belt comedy…
And while we are speaking about “charming”, the cast assembled here is just that, with all assembled more than game to take on whatever incredible sexy-time nonsense the script (authored by Keith Kjornes, who also happens to co-star in the film as Dr. Oliver) throws their way… however, my favorite performance comes from an actress that portrays the distaff version of James Michael Taylor’s Pvt. Bruno.. this lady is dynamite, and appears to be having the time of her mother fuckin’ life in this thing… yet I couldn’t find her credited anywhere…
Also of note… besides that twice aforementioned appearance by Stevens, this flick also boasts a turn from the original Leatherface himself, Gunnar Hansen in a comedic role as Dr. Kildare; the inventor of those 3-D specs mentioned up yonder.
As if all of that wasn’t enough to entice you lascivious lot to do a deep dive into this reptilian release from those devious devils over at Visual Vengeance, then perhaps the absolute ass-load of special features on this thing will sway ya!
First up we get a duo of audio commentaries; one featuring McCormick and Wacked Films CEO Glen Coburn (which takes us through the film’s production in detail) and the other provided by Sam Panico of B&S About Movies and Bill Van Ryn of Drive-In Asylum (offering a view of the film from the fan’s perspective)… both are fun listens, but at-times suffer from those dreaded “dead spots” where the participants fail to speak as if mesmerized by the film… which in this case is understandable…
Following that we get an archival “making of” featurette, an interview with McCormick (also archival), and the film’s original opening scene (replaced by the repetition of the Steven’s footage from later in the film, and mentioned above).
Next comes a selection of new interviews featuring McCormick, producer Wynn Winberg, Stevens, and actors Carl Merritt and Randy Clower… as well as two versions of the film’s trailer (the original as well as the Visual Vengeance cut).
This being a Visual Vengeance release, you also get some extra ghoulish goodies including a folded mini-poster, sticker sheet, a pair of branded x-ray specs, and a reversible sleeve (featuring the film’s original VHS artwork).
Genuinely hilarious, unabashedly horny, and completely entertaining from start to finish; Repligator is an absolute beastly (and bosomy) blast!
