Daniel XIII; the result of an arcane ritual involving a King Diamond album, a box of Count Chocula, and a copy of Swank magazine, is a screenwriter, director, producer, actor, artist, and reviewer of fright flicks…Who hates ya baby?

A gaggle of friends make that classic fright flick mistake by stopping to pick up an attractive hitchhiker. The end result of that blunder finds our heroes drugged, dragged to some shady-ass building or another, and fitted with vials in the base of their skulls.

They soon learn that their captor intends on harvesting their brain fluid in those vicious vials… fluid collected via episodes of extreme pain! Soon all captives within those wicked walls are giving and receiving the gift of torture porn in a bid to survive the ordeal, but in all honesty their chances are slim as fuck…

Coming from Director Taylor Sheridan (who wrote 2015’s Sicario) and Screenwriters Eric Jay Beck and Rob Kowsaluk, Vile is an odd entry in the aforementioned torture porn sub-genre. Populated with intentionally rote characters, it’s hard to root for anyone in particular… which isn’t usually a problem, as torture porn flicks are often made on the strength of their effects and their willingness to show unreasonable bodily harm, but here Vile plays things pretty damn safe with some of the violence even occurring off-screen… but what is shown is admittedly very well done.

More effective are the mysterious group behind this sinister social experiment/harvesting operation as just what they are up to is enough of a quandary to keep interest in the narrative, and the story has some effective third-act twists, and .

Also, bonus points awarded for the inclusion of horror biz famous face Maria Olson (Paranormal Activity 3, Starry Eyes) in a suitably sinister cameo!

As for special features on this Blu-ray release from MVD we get deleted scenes and a trailer. Additionally this release features a reversible sleeve and a slipcover.

While nothing entirely new, Vile still produces some thrills and entertains with a twist or two and is worth a watch for fans of the genre.
