Last year’s based on a true crime mini-series, “Monster: The Jeffery Dahmer Story,” starring Evan Peters, made waves, garnering acclaim from viewers and critics alike with over 196.2 million viewers in its first week alone on Netflix, according to Variety.
News has now come that creator and showrunner Ryan Murphy has chosen his next subject for the series that tells the “stories of other monstrous figures who have impacted society.” Season two of the series will explore the crimes of Lyle and Erik Menendez, the brothers who butchered their parents. Netflix made the announcement with a teaser for “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story,” which you can watch below.
The Crime
The brothers butchered their parents, José and Mary Louise “Kitty” Menéndez, in their Beverly Hills home On August 20, 1989. Lyle and Erik entered the living room where their parents were sitting, carrying Mossberg 12-gauge shotguns. They shot their father six times. Their mother, Kitty, was shot ten times. She was alive for nine of those shots. Lyle actually had to stop mid-murder to run to his car to reload before firing the fatal shot to her face.
At first, they claimed it was an intruder, but during the trial, the brothers stated that they committed the crime out of fear that their father would kill them after they threatened to expose him for years of sexual, physical, and emotional abuse. However, the prosecution claimed it was to inherit their parents’ multimillion-dollar estate. The two were tried separately, and the first trial ended deadlocked. The second trial saw them tried together, and they were found guilty, with the brothers receiving life in prison without the chance of parole.
