The Seeding, the new film from director Barnaby Clay, has a brand new dark but beautiful poster from artist Akiko Stehrenberger.
The film is a chilling exploration of human nature wrapped in the guise of a twisted fable. While Clay is a relative newcomer to the world of feature films, he brings a wealth of experience from the world of music videos and art installations, which is evident in the film’s unique visual style and unsettling atmosphere.
Clay describes The Seeding as dealing with “big themes” in a “small, contained way.” This approach creates a sense of claustrophobia and intensity that draws the audience into the characters’ world and their struggle for survival. The film’s setting, a remote desert canyon, further amplifies this feeling of isolation and vulnerability.
Clay’s comparison of the film to a “brutal adult version of a children’s story or fable” is apt. The film’s narrative structure and simple themes are reminiscent of fairy tales, but the violence and brutality are anything but child-friendly. This juxtaposition creates a disturbing and thought-provoking experience for viewers.
Prior to The Seeding, Clay directed the documentary “SHOT! The Psycho-Spiritual Mantra of Rock” and several award-winning short films, including “Carousel” starring Chloe Sevigny and “Sickdog” starring Tunde Adebimpe and Natasha Lyonne. His background in music and art is evident in his work, which often combines striking visuals with powerful storytelling.
In the film, a lone hiker, lost and dehydrated in the unforgiving desert, stumbles upon a seemingly idyllic oasis – a small cabin inhabited by a mysterious woman. What starts as a desperate plea for help soon descends into a chilling realization: the woman may not be there willingly.
This suspenseful horror-thriller stars the acclaimed actors Scott Haze (Venom, Jurassic World: Dominion) and Kate Lyn Sheil (You’re Next, V/H/S). Haze brings his intense and nuanced presence to the role of the hiker, his desperation and growing fear palpable on screen. Sheil, known for her captivating and often unsettling performances, delivers a layered and enigmatic portrayal of the woman, keeping the audience guessing about her true motives.
Magnet Releasing will unveil The Seeding in theaters and on VOD on January 26, 2024.
