Netflix is known for many things, one of which is picking up shows that are close to ending, like “Lucifer.” Their latest is the supernatural series “Evil,” whose fourth season is said to be its last. But it is not going down without a fight. The stars are fighting tooth and nail for it to be renewed, and we’re keeping our fingers crossed that they succeed.
Debuting on CBS in 2019, the Robert and Michele King series garnered a strong following for four seasons. Plans for a fifth season on Paramount+ were underway, but a cast member’s family loss necessitated a filming delay. Unfortunately, this delay coincided with Hollywood labor disputes. By the time those were resolved, Paramount+ decided to cancel the show, leaving season four as the series finale. But in this writer’s opinion, the series has more stories it could tell.
In case you don’t already know, “Evil” centers on a team of investigators for the Catholic church: Kristen Bouchard (Katja Herbers), Father David Acosta (Mike Colter), and Ben Shakir (Aasif Mandvi). They are tasked with finding out if events are supernatural. They face demons and deal with possessions, relics, and more. All while the series’ villain, Leland (Michael Emerson), is on a mission to bring the Antichrist into the world.
“Evil” exploded onto the scene in 2019, garnering a stellar 92% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes for its first season. TV Guide even hailed it as “the best show of 2021.” It also had four nominations at the Critics’ Choice Awards for Best Horror Series and performances by Katja Herbers, Mike Colter, and Michelle Monaghan. The momentum only grew, with season two boasting a Rotten Tomatoes score of 95%. The awards, coupled with solid viewership, paint a clear picture: “Evil” is a show that resonates deeply with audiences and critics alike.
While seasons 3 and 4 of “Evil” garnered perfect approval ratings from fans and critics, a twist of fate cut the show’s run short. Despite its undeniable critical and audience acclaim, Paramount+ canceled “Evil” after its fourth season.
Despite Paramount+’s cancellation, “Evil” star Katja Herbers hasn’t given up hope. She’s actively campaigning for Netflix or Amazon to pick up the series for its intended fifth and final season. Considering the show’s strong viewership numbers on Netflix and Paramount+, this strategy has a chance of success.
