Well the property values in ol’ South Bay are likely to go completely “tits up” as real estate agents surely (do not) say. Why you ask? Probably a bit of a side effect of having two murderers runnin’ rampant in the streets… but who knows, businesses have possibly left the area… dammit, now I’m trying to support my made-up premise… about the property values, not the murders… those are definitely going the fuck on!
The two causes of the murderous mayhem are the appropriately named South Bay Slasher (Lawrence Waller) a real lady-killer… literally… the other, a female vigilante hell bent on skipping the whole middleman of “the Law” and going straight to capital punishment… but admittedly she has a reason for her actions… not that it justifies them… but c’mon, dig this:
Alexis Walker (Linnea Swanson) is your average, everyday type of gal… she’s got a job, she’s a bit introverted, and, as is the way, her family was murdered in a home invasion. It’s that last bit that turns her into a criminal killin’ machine that comes alive after five faster than you can say “Frank Castle”.
As she walks revenge road, Alexis begins working her way up the ladder of those responsible for her family’s demise… namely crime-lord Dante (Ken Brewer) and his criminal crew, but local law enforcement is hot on her heels, because no matter how popular she is with the more law-abiding citizens of South Bay, a crime is a crime… but, what will happen when killer faces killer in a city gone mad?!
Director Ken Brewer’s (who also co-wrote the film along with Meri Gyetvay) Death Bitch is a love letter to ‘70s and ‘80s vigilante flicks like Bronson’s Death Wish series with that distaff twist that also brings to mind absolute bangers such as 1973’s Thriller: A Cruel Picture and 1985’s Avenging Angel (and it’s sequels).
But make no mistake, this flick is it’s own film as well and features a great pace, slasher elements (not often found in the genre), and plenty of that good ol’ violence… especially in the bullet-laden third act, and the stark photography and (seemingly) undressed urban locations add a ton of ambiance to the affair!
A huge plus is the cast assembled here, all seem to be incredibly game and that infects the proceedings with a real sense of fun… unhinged fun, but fun all the same… and heart.
If you dig on any of the flicks listed above, I urge you to give Death Bitch a wicked whirl; it’s a solid throw back to the vigilante pics that went so damn hard at the grindhouse in decades past!
If you dig on anything I’ve gone on about up above, and want to catch Death Bitch for your own damn self, there are a few ways to do so including checking out the film’s American premier on August 29th (at the Starlight Terrace Theater in California), or it’s Canadian premiere in September (at the Evans Theater in Brandon Manitoba), or by pre-ordering a DVD or Blu-ray right here!
