M3GAN made waves when it debuted in 2022, bringing over $180 million at the box office. So, it wasn’t surprising that the sequel, M3GAN 2.0, was announced shortly after. Variety has just shared the first behind-the-scenes image of the killer doll in her new body, which is identical to the old one.
In the first film, Alison Williams (Get Out) plays Gemma, a brilliant roboticist at a toy company that creates M3GAN, an AI life-like doll. It is programmed to be a kid’s most fantastic companion and a parent’s greatest ally. After she takes in her orphaned niece Cady (Violet McGraw), Gemma enlists the help of the M3GAN prototype – but things take a horrifying turn.
After the doll goes on a killing spree, Gemma and Cady manage to destroy its body. But that won’t stop her for long. M3GAN’s consciousness was transferred to Gemma’s Alexa-like device.
Williams and McGraw are not the only ones returning for the sequel. Akela Cooper, who wrote the first film, and director Gerard Johnstone are back for another round of terror.
The sequel’s cast includes Jemaine Clement, Brina Jordan Alvarez, Amie Donald, Jenna Davis, Ivanna Sakhno, and Timm Sharp.
So when will M3GAN return? It’s sooner than you would think. M3GAN 2.0 will open in theaters nationwide on January 7, 2025.
