Following the success of his recent vampire film Nosferatu, director Robert Eggers has moved on to his next adventure. The brilliant filmmaker is set to re-team with Focus Features for Werwulf, a 13th-century werewolf horror film.
Eggers co-wrote Werwulf with Sjón, his collaborator on the acclaimed Viking saga The Northman. While plot details remain under wraps, sources confirm that the story is set in 13th-century England and features dialogue in Old English with accompanying translations. Eggers will also reunite with Chris Columbus, who will produce as he did with Nosferatu.
Eggers promises another “deep dive into a muddy, costumed, and violent period,” a characteristic of his distinctive cinematic style, which we saw with The Witch and The Lighthouse and Nosferatu. Let’s be honest: the filmmaker is talented at creating gripping and often chilling period pieces that are as disturbing as they are stunning. Eggers initially planned to shoot Werwulf in black and white, like he did with The Lighthouse, but has reportedly changed his mind.
THR reports that Werwulf will be released theatrically on Christmas Day 2026. We will update you as more details become available. While you wait, watch Nosferatu, which I called “a masterpiece of gothic horror” in my review, now on VOD and digital.
