Prepare to be chilled to the bone by The Ugly Stepsister, a twisted reimagining of the Cinderella fairy tale. Written and directed by Emilie Blichfeldt, this haunting Norweigen film will make its world premiere as the opening night Midnight section at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival. Ahead of its debut, we have the first look.
In this tale, Elvira is desperate to escape her impoverished life and is determined to win the prince’s affection. However, in a kingdom where beauty is valued above all else, she must outshine her stepsister, Agnes. This turns into a ruthless competition for the prince’s favor.
The Ugly Stepsister stars Lea Myren, Thea Sofie Loch Næss, and Ane Dahl Torp. Produced by Maria Ekerhovd, it marks Blichfeldt’s feature film debut. The film follows the success of her critically acclaimed short film, Sara’s Intimate Confessions, which screened at festivals like Locarno and Clermont-Ferrand.
The Ugly Stepsister promises to be a visually stunning and emotionally disturbing exploration of ambition, jealousy, and the dark side of fairy tales.
