Resident Evil is the top horror video game franchise selling millions of copies worldwide, which spawned spinoff games, books, comics, collectible toys, and movies. When it came to the films, fans were divided as the Paul W.S. Anderson films quickly deviated from the game’s plot and made an original story using elements from the game’s story. Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City made more of an effort to stay true to the games but failed again in telling the story.

It’s been a rumor for a while but it’s been recently confirmed that Zach Cregger, who wrote and directed the cult hit Barbarian and has cemented himself in Hollywood as a powerhouse of creativity, will be writing and directing the reboot of Resident Evil with Shay Hatten (John Wick 4, Army of the Dead) co-writing. Constantin Film and PlayStation Productions will be producing the film while major Hollywood studios are clawing at the chance to have their studios release the film with Warner Brothers and Netflix leading in the bidding war that’s sprouting up.

From what sources in Hollywood are saying, Cregger wants to redo the film franchise from the ground up and keep it to the game and its story, possibly so much so to set the film in 1996, when the first game took place (as well as was released). As a longtime fan of the game series and a fan of Cregger, I have faith that he’ll give Resident Evil fans what they want.
