Days after the announcement that Scott Foley has joined the cast of Scream 7, fans are reeling from another monumental casting reveal. Matthew Lillard is officially returning to the Scream universe! This news has sent shockwaves through the horror community.

Lillard has openly expressed his belief that Stu survived the events of the original Scream. While the exact nature of Lillard’s involvement in Scream 7 remains shrouded in mystery, his recent Instagram post strongly hints at Stu’s continued existence, fueling rampant speculation among fans.

Stu Macher was one of the original Ghostface killers alongside Billy Loomis in Wes Craven’s groundbreaking 1996 slasher. His apparent demise at the climax of the film – a brutal combination of multiple stab wounds and a television set dropped on his head – has long been a point of contention among fans.

Questions also surround the return of Scott Foley, whose Scream 3 character Roman Bridger also was also thought to have met his end.

This double dose of resurrected characters has ignited a flurry of theories. Is Scream 7 taking a meta, New Nightmare-esque approach, with Lillard and Foley playing fictionalized versions of themselves? Are they returning in flashbacks? Or, as many fans hope, are they reprising their roles as Stu Macher and Roman Bridger, respectively? We’ll just have to wait to find out.

However, the two are not the only ones returning. Neve Campbell, Courtney Cox, Jasmin Savoy Brown, and Mason Gooding will be back. New cast members include , McKenna Grace (Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire), and Sam Rechner (The Fabelmans). Asa Germann (“The Boys”), Anna Camp (“Pitch Perfect”), and Isabel May (“1883”). Kevin Williamson, who wrote the original, is back to direct

Ghost Face will return in Scream 7, set to premiere in theaters on February 27, 2026. Watch Scream 6 now streaming on Paramount+.
