The highly anticipated new movie Alpha from visionary French filmmaker Julia Ducournau, the genius behind the unsettling Raw, has returned to horror with the film, which premiered earlier this week at Cannes. And to celebrate, NEON has just dropped the first official teaser trailer.

What’s the Story of “Alpha”?

The film’s synopsis offers a tantalizing, if cryptic, peek into its unsettling premise: “Alpha, a troubled 13-year-old, lives with her single mom. Their world collapses the day she returns from school with a tattoo on her arm.” Knowing Ducournau’s previous work, you can bet that tattoo will be far more than just skin deep.

Alpha stars Golshifteh Farahani (The Patience Stone) and Tahar Rahim (The Serpent), two powerhouse actors who are sure to bring intense depth to this mysterious narrative.

A Lot of Buzz

The excitement from the film’s production teams is palpable. FilmNation Entertainment and Charades released a joint statement: “Alpha is Julia’s most personal, profound work yet, and we are looking forward to a global audience discovering the story with as much excitement as we did.”

The producers echoed this sentiment, noting, “Alpha is a new page in Julia Ducournau’s corpus, consistent with the previous ones and entirely new in its tone. To match an exceptional project, it was necessary to transcend conventions, as evidenced by the exceptional combination of producers on one hand and international sales companies on the other.” This suggests “Alpha” will push boundaries in ways we’ve come to expect from Ducournau, while also offering something fresh and unexpected.
