I usually find creature features iffy. Most are filmed with CGI creatures, and let’s be honest, they often suck. I did not let this deter me from watching Coyotes, after all, it stars Justin Long and Kate Bosworth.

The movie, mostly horror with a dash of comedy, centers on a family whose neighborhood is taken over by a pack of bloodthirsty coyotes. What ensues is a fight for survival as the family and neighbors must face the killer canines, as a storm hits, and the neighbor’s house goes up in flames. Talk about insanity!

Back to the coyotes, yes, they are all CGI. But they’re not bad. And I say that, having seen many real coyotes (I live in very rural Georgia). If you get into the movie, like I did, you forget about them being CGI. So, I’m not going to complain. Plus, someone would have to be insane to let a real pack of coyotes, trained or not, on a set with actors.

The cast is fantastic. Long played someone you can easily identify with and feel empathy for. He’s an overworked and out-of-touch dad desperate to reconnect with his family. As for Bosworth’s character, the frustrated wife just trying to keep her family together, I get it. I really identify with Harris’ Chloe, whose love for animals may have started the whole thing. Her goal is to protect the family dog. I’d be the same way. I will say that I really got a kick out of Butz’ Trip, the kinky neighbor. I found him both creepy and funny. Allen’s Julie, the prostitute, was interesting. A good bit of the comedy comes from the exterminator played by Keir O’Donnell. I’m a little surprised that we don’t see more of him.

As for the ending of Coyotes, I found it fitting. I’m not going to spoil it for you. But I will say that it makes a statement about humans’ bad habit of encroaching on wildlife, and the problems that can ensue.

I took the night to think about what I would say in this review. My answer? I keep coming back to the word fun. And it is fun. It’s an action-packed movie that keeps you on the edge of your seat. If you are looking for blood and gore and laughs, this movie is for you. It’s got a bit of everything. I would definitely recommend putting it at the top of your must-see list. But be warned, if you are an animal lover, there are a few scenes you might find hard to watch. Just remember, the coyotes aren’t real, and you should be okay.

Head to the theater on October 3, 2025, and watch Coyotes bare its teeth.
