Zach Cregger’s Weapons has been a massive hit, bringing in over $260 million. You may recall the rumors that circulated a couple of months ago about a Weapons prequel. Well, it looks like they are true!
In a recent chat with Fangoria, director Zach Cregger finally cleared the air. He confirmed that a prequel centered on Aunt Gladys is indeed happening. He has been in talks with Warner Bros. and New Line, and he already has a story mapped out. This isn’t just a random idea thrown together because the first movie was a hit. Cregger revealed that he actually had this concept “in his pocket before the movie even came out.”
“It is real, and I’ve been talking to Warner Bros. about it. There’s a story, and I’m pretty excited about it. It’s not bullshit.” Cregger stated.
We’ll get to explore a part of the story that wasn’t seen in the original film. Cregger mentioned that he had to cut some material from the Weapons script that would have gone into Aunt Gladys’s backstory. This is so that the new movie can serve as a way to expand on that lore. The character, Gladys, who was terrifying, is played by Amy Madigan. She is unrecognizable without the heavy makeup and wiry red hair. Gladys turned out to be the film’s villain.
In case you missed it, the film has a chilling premise: all but one child from the same class mysteriously vanish on the same night. The community is left desperate, questioning who—or what—is behind the disappearances. The cast is stacked with talent, including Julia Garner (The Wolf Man), Josh Brolin (Avengers: Endgame), Alden Ehrenreich (Solo: A Star Wars Story), and Benedict Wong (Doctor Strange).
However, before Cregger can start work on the prequel, he is set to direct the new Resident Evil film, which will reunite him with Weapons actor Austin Abrams. It is scheduled to open in theaters in September 2026. We’ll keep you posted as more details surface about the prequel. In the meantime, you can watch Weapons now on streaming services, VOD, and Digital Platforms, or purchase your copy on Blu-ray or 4K.
