Filmmaker Robert Eggers is plunging back into period horror with his upcoming film, Werwulf. The new behind-the-scenes photos from the UK offer a sneak peek into his dark and deadly world.

Shared across multiple social media accounts, photos offer a first look at the cast and crew and the 13th-century set.

A Descent into Darkness

While concrete plot details remain under wraps, director Robert Eggers has already promised a chilling experience. During a recent Q&A at the Lincoln Center, Eggers declared his upcoming Werwulf movie the “darkest thing” he has ever written. And that says a lot after giving us films like The Witch, The Lighthouse, and Nosferatu.

The Creative Team and Cast

Eggers co-wrote the screenplay for Werwulf with Sjón, the Icelandic poet and novelist with whom he previously collaborated on Nosferatu.

The film features a reunion of Eggers’ frequent collaborators, signaling a strong creative continuity. Aaron Taylor-Johnson will once again lead the cast, following their work together on Nosferatu. He is reportedly joined by familiar faces, including Lily-Rose Depp, Willem Dafoe, and Ralph Ineson.

Jarin Blaschke, responsible for the stunning visuals in many of Eggers’ previous films, serves as the cinematographer. The producers are Tim Bevan, Garett Bird, Eggers, Eric Fellner, and Sjón, with Chris Columbus and Eleanor Columbus serving as executive producers.

With production now officially underway in the UK, Werwulf promises to be a haunting and historically detailed addition to Eggers’ growing horror filmography. As for his next project,  Eggers is also currently attached to helm a Labyrinth sequel.

Werwulf will bare its teeth in theaters on December 25, 2026.
