Get ready to pull on your lab coat and polish up your best bad accent, because a truly hilarious project is in the works! FX recently wrapped production on the pilot episode for “Very Young Frankenstein,” a brand-new series inspired by Mel Brooks’ iconic 1974 horror parody masterpiece, Young Frankenstein! And guess what? Mel Brooks himself is an executive producer, so you know this is coming with the legend’s blessing.
The Ultimate Comedy Brain Trust
The talent attached to this project is absolutely stacked with comedy icons and modern geniuses. The pilot was directed by Taika Waititi (Thor: Ragnarok, What We Do in the Shadows), who is also executive producing. The showrunner bringing this wacky vision to life is Stefani Robinson. He is also one of the brilliant minds behind “What We Do in the Shadows” and “Atlanta”.
The cast is equally phenomenal, including Zach Galifianakis (The Hangover), Dolly Wells (Pride and Prejudice and Zombies), Spencer House (Space Force), and Nikki Crawford (Cruel Intentions). They are joined by Kumail Nanjiani (Eternals) and Cary Elwes (Saw).
Waiting to See if the Monster Lives
As of right now, this stellar team is doing exactly what the rest of us are doing: waiting to hear if the pilot gets picked up for a whole series!
Kumail Nanjiani recently told Deadline how much fun the shoot was: “I’ve been friends with Zach [Galifianakis] for a very long time. I’ve been friends with Taika [Waititi] for a very long time… I love the original movie. Fan of those guys. It was a really fun shoot.” When you combine longtime friends and amazing talent, you know the vibe on set was perfect for Brooksian chaos!
The Legacy of the Lightning
While plot details are currently under wraps, the original film—written by Brooks and starring Gene Wilder—is legendary. It told the story of the grandson of the infamous Dr. Frankenstein, who desperately tries to prove his ancestor wasn’t crazy. In the process, he discovers the exact method that reanimates a dead body, resulting in pure cinematic brilliance.
Michael Gruskoff, the producer of Young Frankenstein, is also executive producing the pilot, alongside Waititi and Robinson. This is shaping up to be a true comedic force.
We’ve got our fingers crossed that FX gives this pilot the green light soon! The world desperately needs more sophisticated, silly horror-parody, and this team is ready to deliver!
Here’s a look back at the original film’s trailer. If you haven’t seen it, and you absolutely should, you can snag it on Blu-ray and DVD now.
