If you’ve ever thought about going on an archaeological dig in a remote corner of Ireland, you might want to watch this movie first. Cineverse just announced that their latest supernatural thriller, The Morrigan, is set to haunt your living room soon.
Ancient Mythology Meets Modern Terror
The story follows an archaeologist (Saffron Burrows) who specializes in Gaelic mythology. She heads to a remote Irish region with her teenage daughter, hoping to uncover a long-lost tomb. However, some things are better left buried.
They accidentally release The Morrigan, a vengeful Pagan War Goddess, and the trip quickly shifts from a history lesson into a desperate fight for survival. The mom has to do everything in her power to keep her daughter from falling under the goddess’s dark influence.
A Cast of Heavy Hitters
The film isn’t just relying on spooky atmosphere; it’s also got a stellar cast to back it up. Saffron Burrows (Troy, The Bank Job) leads the charge. Toby Stephens (Black Sails, Die Another Day) and James Cosmo (Braveheart, Game of Thrones) join her.
Why It’s Worth the Watch
Directed by Colum Eastwood, The Morrigan is a passion project rooted in the very landscapes where these myths were born.
“This film is deeply personal to me, drawing on the stories and landscapes I grew up with,” Eastwood says.
The movie has already been making waves on the festival circuit, with successful stops at the Galway Film Fleadh, Tallinn Black Nights, and the Tromsø International Film Festival.
Cineverse is on a Roll
This release comes hot on the heels of Cineverse’s highly anticipated titles like Return to Silent Hill and Wolf Creek: Legacy. If you love high-stakes, “elevated” horror that taps into ancient folklore, this is definitely one to add to your watchlist.
The Morrigan hits digital platforms on February 3rd. Check out the trailer below if you’re brave enough!
