The Cannes market just got a whole lot more interesting. Oscar winner and Captain Marvel star Brie Larson is set to lead a brand-new creature feature film titled Fail-Safe. And the talent attached to this project is honestly ridiculous.

A Secret in the Suburbs

Imagine growing up and slowly realizing your mom isn’t exactly… human.

Fail-Safe is described as a modern spin on the creature feature, told from the perspective of a young boy. As he watches his parents, he begins to uncover a disturbing secret they’ve been hiding: his mother (played by Larson) has a “true nature” that is far from ordinary. It sounds like a claustrophobic, emotional, and terrifying take on family dynamics.

A Horror “Dream Team”

If you’re a genre fan, the team should get you very excited.

The Star: Brie Larson is taking a break from the MCU to tackle something much grittier. The Producer, none other than J.J. Abrams. He is producing through his Bad Robot label. He’s already calling the script an “absolute powerhouse.”

JT Mollner is stepping behind the camera. If you saw his cult-hit thriller Strange Darling, you know he knows how to handle high-tension storytelling.

The screenplay was based on a short story by Philip Fracassi and was written by Brian Duffield, the mastermind behind the recent alien-invasion hit No One Will Save You.

Why It’s Making Waves

J.J. Abrams isn’t holding back the praise, calling the movie “as sweet and moving as it is terrifying.” The goal is to create a rare kind of horror film—one where you actually care about the characters and maybe even laugh a little before the “absolutely wild ride” kicks into high gear.

The project is being financed by Infrared (the label behind the recent Jack Quaid thriller, Novocaine) and is currently being shopped to international buyers.

Brie Larson’s Busy Slate

This marks another huge move for Larson, who has been balancing blockbusters like Fast X and The Marvels with prestige TV like “Lessons in Chemistry.” Seeing her dive into “creature horror” feels like a return to the intense, character-driven work that won her an Oscar for Room.
