Last night, the Academy Awards handed out little gold statues to the best of the best, and for once, horror films dominated, with multiple films taking home not only nominations but also wins.
Sinners
With a total of 16 nominations, Sinners, the vampire movie about two brothers returning to their hometown to open a juke joint, dominated. The show it put on at the Oscars, reliving the juke joint scene, was fantastic. It recaptured one of the most moving scenes in the film.
The Oscars may have added a few trophies to Sinners’ shelf, but it is by no means the only award it’s gotten. So far, it’s won over 200 awards and was our pick for the number-one horror film of 2025 on our Top 10 list.
Oscar Wins:
Best Actor: Michael B. Jordan
Original Score: Ludwig Göransson
Cinematography: Autumn Durald Arkapaw
Original Screenplay: Ryan Coogler
Weapons
Weapons was a massive hit at the box office and at home, earning two Oscars. Fans of this twisted film will be happy to learn that a new movie is on its way, centered on the iconic and unnerving character of Aunt Gladys, played by Amy Madigan.
Oscar Wins:
Best Supporting Actress: Amy Madigan
Production Design: Tamara Deverell and Shane Vieau
Frankenstein
I’m not going to lie, I was a bit shocked that Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein didn’t win more. It is absolutely brilliant and stunning; however, it did face serious competition.
Oscar Wins:
Makeup and Hairstyling: Mike Hill, Jordan Samuel, Cliona Furey
Production Design: Tamara Deverell and Shane Vieau
Costume Design: Kate Hawley
Snubs
I will admit I found one thing disappointing about the award season and the Oscars. Sinner’s Jack O’Connell, who walked the Academy Awards red carpet wearing fangs, was robbed. His role in Sinners had a massive impact on the film and story, yet he did not even get a nomination. But, he’s a winner in our book.
