In the modern justice system, thousands of inmates spend 23 hours a day locked in a cell, alone, in solitary confinement. It is well-documented that this level of isolation—sometimes spanning years—causes irreparable damage to the human psyche. Yet, the practice continues. This haunting reality is the heartbeat of the new film Newborn.

From One Prison to Another

The story follows Chris, a man who takes the fall for his brother’s crime, unaware that it would cost him a decade of his life. After a confrontation with guards, Chris is thrown into solitary confinement, where he remains for seven harrowing years.

When he finally steps back into society, Chris discovers that the “real world” is its own brand of psychological cage. As he struggles to rebuild a life with a family that no longer feels familiar, the lines between his living room and his former cell begin to blur. Newborn is an unflinching look at the trauma of being systematically exiled.

A Masterclass from David Oyelowo

Chris is portrayed by the incomparable David Oyelowo (Selma, Lawman: Bass Reeves). I recently had the opportunity to sit down with David to discuss the film. And it left a profound impression on me.

We already know David is a master of portraying deeply conflicted, emotional characters, but his work here as Chris is on another level. During our conversation, his passion for this project was infectious. From the second he began to speak, it was clear that he poured his soul into this role—and it shows in every frame of the film.

More Than Just a Movie

Beyond the drama, Newborn serves as a vital call for awareness. It shines a light on those currently suffering in isolation and the “walking wounded”—those who have been freed but carry permanent mental and physical scars.

Newborn opens in AMC theaters nationwide on April 10, 2026. Watch my full interview with David Oyelowo below.
