It turns out the most dangerous thing in the “Twisted Metal” universe isn’t a homicidal clown in an ice cream truck. It’s a Hollywood “retooling.” Fans of the hit Peacock series are currently in a state of high-octane fury! Why? A casting update that has left the fandom feeling totally betrayed.

The news? Mike Mitchell, who played the lovable, perpetually stressed Stu, officially announced that he will not be returning for Season 3. Which is strange, seeing that he won the checkered flag last season, went to space, and arrived back just in time to save John, Quiet, and Mahym. Having him disappear now would just hurt the story.

A Heartbroken Goodbye

Mitchell dropped the bombshell on a recent episode of the Doughboys podcast, admitting he was “heartbroken” by the decision. According to the actor, the move wasn’t his choice; it was a byproduct of massive behind-the-scenes upheaval.

“I am not trying to be bitter here,” Mitchell shared. “I love the first two seasons… but they made changes. The showrunner left, the writing staff left, and a lot of department heads were let go. There’s been some upheaval.”

Mitchell noted that the decision appeared to be driven by a mix of “creative and financial reasons,” leaving him—and the audience—confused as to why a fan-favorite character was left on the side of the road.

I’m among those upset. Stu is a fantastic character, and when I interviewed Mitchell last season, he was super excited about what was to come for Stu. The fans were as well. I mean, Stu is absolutely lovable. So, what the hell are they thinking?

The Fandom Strikes Back: #NoStuNoStream

If the producers thought fans wouldn’t notice a missing piece of the puzzle, they clearly underestimated the “Twisted Metal” community. Reddit has exploded with the hashtag #NoStuNoStream, with viewers threatening to boycott the upcoming season.

The consensus? Executives are doing “the most Hollywood thing ever” by fixing something that wasn’t broken.

Redditor u/SevereEducation2170 pointed out the absurdity of the move: “Stu is a major character… How you can look at a surprise hit and think ‘let’s renew this but fire everyone who made it work’ is absurd.”

u/Bagelofdeath noted that the show’s success felt like a testament to the “collaborative energy” of the original crew. Removing Mitchell feels like stripping the heart out of a machine that was already punching above its weight class.

In perhaps the most devastating critique, u/ALifelongVacation commented, “Twisted Metal without Stu is like an Italian sub with turkey. Uhhh no thank you!”

What’s Left in the Garage?

While Anthony Mackie (John Doe) and Stephanie Beatriz (Quiet) are still slated to lead the charge, the loss of the original writing staff and showrunner suggests Season 3 might feel like a completely different show.

For a series based on a PlayStation classic known for its chaotic, dark humor, losing the “human” element provided by characters like Stu is a risky gamble. Mitchell’s chemistry with the cast was a huge part of why the show resonated with people who usually hate video game adaptations.

The Verdict

“Twisted Metal” seasons 1 and 2 were rare wins for the genre—scrappy, funny, and surprisingly sincere. By clearing the deck and letting go of the talent that built that foundation, Peacock is driving into the new season with a lot of flat tires.

If you’re a fan of consistency and creator-led visions, this news is a tough pill to swallow. We’ll have to wait and see if the new creative team can maintain the momentum, or if “Twisted Metal” is about to become another victim of the Hollywood scrap heap.

Will you be tuning in without Stu, or is it “Game Over” for you? Here’s a look back at last season’s trailer. Hopefully, the show will get its shit together before the new season’s trailer reaches the finish line. If you want to see Stu return, share the word with #NoStuNoStream and send a message to Peacock that you want Stu back!
