If you thought you’d seen the last of that pale, singing, unsettlingly enthusiastic face, think again. Nicolas Cage is officially returning to the nightmare-scape of Longlegs, and honestly, our collective blood pressure isn’t ready.
Director Osgood Perkins is currently cooking up a new project set within the Longlegs universe. Before you ask: no, it’s not a direct sequel. Think of it as a “spiritual expansion”—which, in Perkins’ world, usually involves more occult dread, and more reasons to sleep with the lights on. Cage isn’t just starring; he’s also returning as a producer, ensuring the vibes remain sufficiently unhinged.
The Business of Being Terrifying
While the original film followed FBI Agent Lee Harker (Maika Monroe) as she used her “vibes-based” detective work to hunt a serial killer who left few fingerprints, the real magic happened in the accounting department, with the film grossing $128 million on a $10 million budget.
However, the upcoming film is moving house. Paramount Pictures has snatched up the distribution rights after Neon reportedly balked at a “larger-than-expected” budget. Apparently, summoning the devil costs a bit more the second time around.
The Osgood Perkins Touch
Perkins has spent years carving out a niche for “elevated” horror that feels like a cold hand on your neck. His resume is a graveyard of atmospheric hits: The Blackcoat’s Daughter, I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House, Gretel & Hansel, and the Stephen King adaptation The Monkey.
Is the Whole Gang Coming Back?
While Cage is a lock, the rest of the cast—including Maika Monroe and Kiernan Shipka—remains a mystery. Given that the new film is a “follow-up” rather than a direct continuation, we might be looking at an entirely new group of victims… er, characters.
The Cage Renaissance Continues
Nic Cage is currently busier than a clairvoyant FBI agent in a basement. Between his Oscar-winning past (Leaving Las Vegas) and his “I’ll do anything and make it iconic” present, his schedule is packed. He’s starring in the upcoming projects Spider-Noir (May 25), Madden: Yes, he’s playing the legendary football coach. There’s also Lords of War and the recently released religious horror The Carpenter’s Son.
We don’t have a release date or a title yet, but we do know one thing: if Nicolas Cage is involved, it’s going to be weird, loud, and glorious. If you have the urge to rewatch Longlegs, you can find it on Amazon Prime and Hulu. Here’s a look back at the unsettling trailer.
