The infamous 1978 cult classic that once fueled urban legends and parental nightmares is officially back, but this time, the “snuff” is a bit more self-aware. Shudder’s reimagining of Faces of Death has just begun its theatrical run, and the early critical consensus suggests it’s not exactly a flatline.

While the original was a grimy anthology of “real” (and famously faked) death footage, this 2026 update trades the VHS aesthetic for the digital dread of the modern internet. The story follows a content moderator who descends into a rabbit hole of videos that meticulously—and violently—recreate iconic death scenes from cinema history. It’s a meta-horror setup that asks: in an era of endless scrolling, what does it take actually to shock us?

Early Reviews

Early reviews are trickling in, and the film currently holds a respectable 60% Tomatometer on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics seem split between praising its direction and worrying it’s trying to be a bit too “intellectual” for a splatter flick. One reviewer even described it as a well-crafted thriller with “too much on its mind,” which is a high-class problem for a franchise that started with grainy footage of animal attacks and morgues.

If this remake manages to keep its head above water at the box office, we might be looking at the birth of a new franchise. Given that the original spawned a literal mountain of sequels and “Fact or Fiction” spin-offs, there is plenty of room for this new timeline to get messy.

The Cast and Crew

Directed by Daniel Goldhaber and co-written by Isa Mazzei, the film is inspired by the infamous 1978 cult classic that once fueled urban legends and parental nightmares, and is officially back. Still, this time, the “snuff” is a bit more self-aware. Shudder’s reimagining of Faces of Death has just begun its theatrical run, and the early critical consensus suggests it’s not exactly a flatline.

The ensemble cast tasked with surviving these digital horrors includes Barbie Ferreira, Dacre Montgomery, Josie Totah, Charli XCX, Jermaine Fowler, and Aaron Holliday.

Faces of Death officially hit theaters on Friday, April 10, 2026. Whether you’re a fan of the original’s notorious legacy or just here for the star-studded carnage, it’s probably best to check your stomach at the door.
