If you’ve been checking your watch for the last 25 years, you can finally take a breath. Rick and Evy aren’t just coming back; they’re coming back early. Universal Pictures has officially exhumed The Mummy 4 from its 2028 tomb and moved the release date up to October 15, 2027.
The film—which marks the triumphant reunion of Academy Award winners Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz—was originally eyeing a May 2028 slot. However, the studio has cleared the runway for a “spooky season” launch, essentially swapping places with the Miami Vice ’85 reboot.
The Gang’s All Here
While the plot is being kept under more wraps than a fresh mummy in Hamunaptra, we do know we’re getting a reunion. Fraser and Weisz return as Rick and Evelyn O’Connell for the first time since 2001’s The Mummy Returns. (We’re all collectively choosing to pretend 2008 didn’t happen). The news doesn’t stop there. John Hannah is officially confirmed to return as the ever-unfortunate Jonathan Carnahan.
The Radio Silence duo—Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett (Scream, Abigail)—are at the helm. If their track record is any indication, expect a high-octane mix of practical gore and sharp-witted action.
Taking Risks with the Rating
During their recent press tour for Ready or Not 2: Here I Come, the directors confirmed they are aiming for a PG-13 rating to match the classic trilogy’s DNA. However, they aren’t planning to play it safe.
“We’re going to find the edge, and I’m sure we’ll step over the line,” Tyler Gillett teased. “We want to take some risks in some really fun ways.”
Translated? They want to recapture that 1999 “Raiders of the Lost Ark” vibe where the adventure is sweeping, but the body horror is just tactile enough to make you squirm in your seat.
Production Timeline
Universal isn’t wasting any time. Pre-production is set to kick off this May 2026, with cameras officially rolling in August.
With a script from David Coggeshall (The Family Plan) and a commitment to practical effects over CGI (goodbye, Scorpion King 2001 nightmares), The Mummy 4 is shaping up to be the franchise correction we’ve been waiting for.
Dust off your pistols and your library cards—October 15, 2027, is going to be a wild ride.
