The eternal war between the High Heavens and the Burning Hells is finally leaping to television. Streaming giant Netflix has officially partnered with Blizzard Entertainment to develop a brand-new animated series set within the dark world of Diablo. The upcoming adaptation aims to expand the legendary action-role-playing universe beyond interactive screens. Bringing the franchise’s lore, demonic hordes, and apocalyptic stakes to a global television audience, Variety reports.

Thirty Years of Hellfire and Hack-and-Slash

The high-profile announcement arrives at a momentous time, marking the 30th anniversary of the original 1996 Diablo release. Over the past three decades, the property has grown into one of gaming’s most influential and successful franchises.

The game expanded with the acclaimed Diablo IV in 2023. However, the fifth installment is on its way and has just dropped its game trailer, also revealed at the convention. Diablo V is targeted for a Spring 2029 release. Set roughly a century after the events of Diablo IV, the game shifts the franchise into uncharted survival territory under a stark premise: Sanctuary has completely fallen, and Diablo has won. Stripping away safe havens and towns, this entry forces players to navigate an oppressive, post-apocalyptic landscape. One where humanity’s last survivors must rely on desperate sacrifices to endure in a world fully claimed by Hell.

A Landmark Reveal at BlizzCon 2026

Blizzard President Johanna Faries officially broke the news during the opening ceremony of BlizzCon 2026 at the Anaheim Convention Center. The fan-favorite convention carries extra weight this year, marking the first live BlizzCon gathering since Microsoft finalized its historic $69 billion acquisition of Activision Blizzard. The multimedia reveal highlights a renewed push to build on the studio’s most successful mainstream entertainment adaptations while celebrating flagship IPs alongside World of Warcraft and Overwatch.

“After decades of bringing entire universes to life through our games, we’re partnering with some creative powerhouses to tell even more stories beyond gaming across new screens—a new animated series set in the world of ‘Diablo’ is in development with Netflix. More details will be shared in the future, but this is only the beginning, with even more taking shape across our universes.” Faries stated.

Gaming Hits Both the Big and Small Screen

Diablo is just one of the many upcoming adaptations. It joins titles such as Prime Video’s upcoming series God of War and Netflix’s Gears of War. Gaming fans will also see Death Stranding and The Legend of Zelda in theaters.
