Freestyle Digital Media, the digital film distribution division of Byron Allen’s Allen Media Group, has officially snagged the VOD rights to the dark comedy mockumentary A Bloody Mess.
Uncovering the Truth Behind the Sludge
Framed as a razor-sharp mockumentary, A Bloody Mess follows obsessed documentarian Violet Blank. She’s on a quest to uncover the cause of a decades-old disaster in a small Texas town. Back in 2002, the quiet community of Split Springs was rocked by a massive explosion at a local manure storage facility. It literally flooded the streets and drove nearly every resident from their home. Talk about a shitty situation.
The rest of the nation pointed, laughed, and reduced the incident to a cheap punchline. However, Violet remains convinced a sinister mastermind is behind the tragedy. While armed with a film crew and no boundaries, her search for a suspect steadily spirals. It goes from questionable journalism into outright peril.
The Cast and Crew Driving the Chaos
Daniel Hayden wrote and directed the film and produced it alongside lead star Sydney O’Toole. The project showcases a stacked ensemble of comedy talent. O’Toole anchors the madness, supported by scene-stealers including Mary Birdsong, Anna Bezahler, Dhruv Uday Singh, James Werner and Jim Woods. Cameron Kelly, Casey Feigh, and Matt O’Toole round out the cast.
Negotiated directly between Freestyle Digital Media, the filmmaking team, and Glen Reynolds of Circus Road Films, the acquisition comes fresh off the movie’s premiere at the Dances With Films festival.
Extracting Justice from Moral Disasters
Beyond the absurdity of its core incident, Hayden notes that the satire cuts much deeper into themes of trauma, retribution, and unchecked ambition. The protagonist operates under the delusion that tracking down her alleged abuser will bring long-overdue catharsis. However, she fails to realize that taking justice into her own hands only perpetuates a cycle of destruction. Her obsessive crusade to fix the past ultimately proves that playing judge and jury guarantees one outcome, ensuring everyone involved ends up in a whole new disaster.
Where to Watch
The satirical indie is set to launch a limited theatrical run starting September 18, 2026. It will hit select screens across New York, Los Angeles, and Boston. Filmmaker Daniel Hayden and star Sydney O’Toole will host a special live Q&A session at the Laemmle Glendale theatre in Glendale, California, on September 14, 2026. The film will roll out across North America on DVD, cable, and satellite s later in the fall.
