Following a record-shattering theatrical run, A24’s Backrooms is dominating the upcoming spooky season. In fact, Spirit Halloween has officially unveiled its new costume line inspired by the blockbuster film. Halloween partygoers can suit up in everything from signature hazmat suits to full Cap’n Clark store gear. All capitalizing on the viral phenomenon that transformed from a YouTube project into a major cinematic milestone.

Box Office History and Big-Screen Triumph

Calling Backrooms a commercial success is a massive understatement. Produced on a modest $10 million budget, the film completely crushed its theatrical competition. It raked in a staggering $81 million domestically in its opening weekend alone. At just 19, director Kane Parsons became the youngest filmmaker in cinema history to helm a number-one movie at the global box office. That’s an unbelievable leap for a creator who began rendering low-fi animations in his bedroom.

Inside the Ottoman Empire Horror

Scripted by Will Soodik and adapted from Parsons’ viral web series, the story centers on Clark, portrayed by Oscar nominee Chiwetel Ejiofor. Clark is a struggling furniture showroom owner unraveling under the weight of a messy divorce, alcoholism, and shattered ambitions. However, while investigating faulty electrical wiring in his basement, he stumbles across a glowing tear in the drywall. Stepping through traps him in an infinite, physics-defying labyrinth defined by damp yellow wallpaper, hum-buzzing fluorescent lights, and sheer psychological isolation.

Prestige Cast and Home Streaming Debut

Ejiofor is supported by an acclaimed ensemble cast featuring Renate Reinsve, Mark Duplass, Finn Bennett, and Lukita Maxwell, grounding the internet urban legend in a terrifying study of human anxiety. Fans eager to rewatch the nightmare at home won’t have to wait long. Backrooms makes its exclusive streaming debut on HBO Max on September 25, 2026, followed by its linear television premiere on HBO on September 26 at 8:00 p.m. ET. To sweeten the release, 16 minutes of bonus footage titled Backrooms – Everything Must Go has also been released to tide audiences over while an official video game and feature sequel move into production.

So, don’t wait! Order your Backrooms-themed costumes now from the online Spirit Halloween store or stop by a store near you. You can find more costumes and Halloween news on HorrorFuel.com.
