Dave Bautista is officially picking up the Leviathan Axe. The acclaimed actor has signed on to lead Amazon Prime Video’s live-action “God of War“ series. He is stepping into the iconic role of Kratos, the legendary Ghost of Sparta.
A Fast-Tracked Recasting Following an On-Set Injury
The recasting comes after Ryan Hurst, who was originally attached to play Kratos, suffered a torn bicep on set that required surgery. Because Hurst’s full recovery would have delayed the restart of production until 2027, Amazon MGM Studios and co-producer Sony Pictures Television made the strategic decision to recast the role.
Filming originally kicked off in Vancouver. Production will restart soon. All scenes previously filmed with Hurst will be reshot to seamlessly integrate the new lead.
Built for the Spartan God
Stepping into a role as physically demanding as Kratos on short notice is a monumental task. Beyond his proven dramatic and action credentials, Bautista maintains the extraordinary, muscular physique that Kratos is famous for in the video game franchise.
A Mythic Journey Across Nine Realms
The series draws inspiration from the critically acclaimed 2018 video game reboot and its Norse-era sequel. The series follows Kratos and his ten-year-old son, Atreus. They set off on a perilous trek across mythic lands to spread the ashes of their wife and mother, Faye. However, along their journey through the Norse pantheon, Kratos struggles to teach his son how to be a proper god. Meanwhile, Atreus works to teach his hardened father how to regain his humanity. Showing immense confidence in the adaptation, Prime Video has handed down a two-season order, with both seasons set to film back-to-back.
A Powerhouse Ensemble and Creative Team
Bautista leads an impressive, stacked cast of television and film talent. Callum Vinson stars alongside him as Atreus, with Mandy Patinkin portraying Odin. Ólafur Darri Ólafsson plays Thor, with Max Parker as Heimdall, Ed Skrein as Baldur, and Alastair Duncan appearing as the wise Mimir. The dwarven blacksmith brothers, Brok and Sindri, will be played by Danny Woodburn and Jeff Gulka.
Behind the camera, the series is guided by industry veterans. Ronald D. Moore serves as writer, showrunner, and executive producer under his Tall Ship Productions banner. Frederick E.O. Toye is set to direct the opening two episodes.
The executive producing team also features game director Cory Barlog, Maril Davis, Naren Shankar, Matthew Graham, Asad Qizilbash, Jeff Ketcham, Hermen Hulst, Roy Lee, and Brad Van Arragon, uniting Sony Pictures Television, Amazon MGM Studios, PlayStation Productions, and Tall Ship Productions for this epic adaptation.
