The hunt for a new God of War is officially on. Prime Video must recast the iconic lead role in its upcoming live-action adaptation of the game after star Ryan Hurst suffered a severe on-set injury, Variety has confirmed.
The news is a devastating blow for the production. The Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios co-production, which adapts PlayStation’s critically acclaimed video game franchise, hit a major roadblock in June when the injury sidelined Hurst. While Deadline first broke the news of the recast, Prime Video has declined to comment.
A Familiar Face Steps Down
Losing Hurst is a bitter pill for the fandom to swallow. The actor is already deeply entrenched in God of War lore, having famously delivered a powerhouse voice-and-motion-capture performance as the Norse god Thor in the smash-hit 2022 game God of War: Ragnarök. Moving him from the hammer to the Leviathan Axe felt like a natural, exciting evolution for the live-action series.
Now, the studio faces the massive task of finding an actor with the imposing presence of the Ghost of Sparta. The incoming Kratos will have to build an on-screen dynamic with Callum Vinson, playing Kratos’ young son, Atreus. Naturally, this shift means a substantial amount of reshoots are on the horizon.
The Realms Await
Despite the setback, the rest of the star-studded mythological ensemble remains firmly in place. The sprawling cast includes Max Parker as Heimdall, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor, and Mandy Patinkin as Odin. Alastair Duncan is reprising his game role as Mimir. Danny Woodburn and Jeff Gulka join them as the dwarven brothers Brok and Sindri, and Ed Skrein as Baldur.
The production is currently on a temporary hiatus while the studio aggressively tests new leads. Once the new Kratos is officially crowned, Prime Video aims to have cameras rolling again and get production back on track by mid-fall.
