Prime Video is officially expanding its horror lineup with a six-part limited series adaptation of Stephen King’s classic short story, “Crouch End.”
It was originally published in the 1980’s New Tales of the Cthulhu Mythos before finding a wider home in King’s 1993 collection Nightmares & Dreamscapes.
A Descending Nightmare in London
“Crouch End” follows American tourist Doris Freeman. She’s a global movie star whose life shatters during a trip abroad. She bursts into a London police station, frantically claiming that uncanny forces are responsible for her husband’s sudden disappearance. Inspector Ted Vetter is tasked with untangling the truth. Vetter must determine whether Doris is suffering a breakdown, hiding a murder, or if an ancient, terrifying entity has truly breached the fabric of reality.
The Creative Powerhouses Behind the Adaptation
The project brings together top-tier talent both behind and in front of the camera. Production is backed by Mammoth Screen and Fifth Season. Writer Paul Tomalin (Bodies) leads the adaptation, while director Tom Shankland (The Serpent, Berlin Noir) will helm the six episodes.
“I’ve been a Stephen King super-fan forever. The chance to work with this great team and bring his utterly brilliant London mystery to life is beyond exciting — Crouch End will be cinematic, original and thought-provoking in equal measure.” Variety quotes Tomaalin as stating.
Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios expressed immense excitement about Tomalin’s character-driven vision. And are promising a visceral blend of a grounded crime thriller and an unsettling supernatural mystery.

The Enduring Legacy of Crouch End
While horror fans may recall the story’s previous small-screen appearance in TNT’s 2006 Nightmares & Dreamscapes anthology—or remember the late Tim Curry’s iconic audiobook narration—this new series aims to dig much deeper into King’s Lovecraftian lore. Inspired by King’s real-life visit to London with fellow author Peter Straub, the eerie tale captures the unsettling feeling of stepping off a familiar street and wandering straight into another dimension, making it a standout favorite among genre enthusiasts.
Upcoming Stephen King Adaptations
As always, there is no shortage of upcoming projects based on adaptations of King’s works. Fans are eager to see Mike Flanagan’s “Carrie” series. It’s joined by season two of “The Institute.” There are also the series “The Dark Tower” and “Fairy Tale” headed your way.
