The wellness revolution is taking over the world, but it turns out living forever is atrocious for the funeral business. Set to make its global debut as a high-profile Centerpiece selection at the Toronto International Film Festival, director Ron Murphy (Wynonna Earp, Jann) brings a wickedly clever dark comedy to the big screen with Back in Black.
Pitting modern longevity crazes against small-town funeral directors, the film explores just how far family loyalty will go when business literally dies out.
When Longevity Kills the Market
In a cozy American town, local undertaker Clyde finds his family-run funeral home on the absolute brink of financial collapse. Between bio-hacking, green juices, daily meditation, and endless health trends, the townspeople stubbornly refuse to die. It is fantastic news for public health, but a complete catastrophe for the death care industry, leaving Clyde watching his livelihood evaporate into thin air.
Taking Fate into Lethal Hands
Enter Sam, Clyde’s quiet and devoted granddaughter. Refusing to watch her grandfather go broke, Sam realizes that if the universe won’t supply the bodies, she will have to create the demand herself. Taking matters into her own ruthless hands, she sparks a quiet, murderous spree that sends the local obituary column back into print and gets the family registers booming once again.
A Powerhouse Comedy Cast
Back in Black boasts a stellar, eccentric ensemble led by Academy Award winner Christopher Walken (The Deer Hunter, Pulp Fiction) and Ella Ballentine (The Monster, The Captive). Comedy legend Jane Curtin (Saturday Night Live, 3rd Rock from the Sun) joins the fray, promising a sharp, pitch-black satire about modern health obsession, small-town secrets, and the extreme measures taken to keep a family business afloat.
