Get ready to polish those tiaras and clear out your fall calendar. Prime Video is serving up a brand-new, blood-soaked coronation. Stephen King’s very first literary masterpiece, “Carrie,” is coming back to life—and this time, the telekinetic prom queen is under the meticulous care of modern horror maestro Mike Flanagan (The Haunting of Hill House, Midnight Mass).
A Cruel, Modern High School Ecosystem
Flanagan isn’t just looking to rehash Brian De Palma’s iconic 1976 film or copy-paste King’s epistolary novel. This version plugs the familiar tragedy straight into the terrifying matrix of social media in an eight-episode season.
Misfit high-schooler Carrie White has spent her life sheltered away by her fiercely protective, fanatical mother, Margaret. Her father’s death thrusts her into the unforgiving ecosystem of public high school. Carrie is forced to navigate a viral bullying scandal and the relentless cruelty of the digital era. She also faces the awakening of mysterious telekinetic powers rising alongside her adolescence.
As Flanagan explained to EW, updating the story felt depressingly relevant:
“The themes that Steve was talking about half a century ago—kindness versus cruelty, empathy versus bullying, and violence at school—have become even more pressing today because of our relationship to technology. We had an opportunity to tell a story about a modern teenage experience using the seeds of the characters King created 50 years ago, but expressing them completely differently.”
What’s just as intriguing is that, rumor has it, the series will expand beyond the White household. It will go on to explore a historical timeline of other telekinetic women throughout history.
The “Flana-Family” Reunion
Flanagan serves as showrunner and writer. He’s also directing four of the eight episodes himself, with Stephen King on board as executive producer. Naturally, he’s stacked the cast with a mix of genre heavyweights and beloved regulars from his cinematic universe:
The Mother-Daughter Duo: Summer H. Howell (The Midnight Club) takes on the daunting mantle of Carrie White, while Flanagan muse Samantha Sloyan (The Fall of the House of Usher) steps into the terrifying, zealot boots of Margaret White.
The High School Food Chain: Siena Agudong plays the empathetic Sue Snell. Alison Thornton steps up as the venomous Chris Hargensen. Joel Oulette plays dream-boat Tommy Ross—joined by Josie Tota, Arthur Conti, and Thalia Dudek.
The Faculty: Amber Midthunder (Prey) is lacing up her sneakers as gym teacher Miss Desjardin, while horror royalty Matthew Lillard (Scream, Five Nights at Freddy’s) is running the halls as Principal Grayle.
The King of Stephen King Adaptations
If anyone has earned the right to touch King’s holy grail, it’s Flanagan. Having already conquered Gerald’s Game, Doctor Sleep, and The Life of Chuck (not to mention his long-gestating dream of adapting The Dark Tower), he has proven time and again that he knows how to balance heart-wrenching emotional trauma with genuine terror.
With King’s official stamp of approval and a massive lore expansion on the horizon, this is easily shaping up to be one of the biggest television events of the year.
