Hard-boiled noir detectives might rely on knuckles and cheap bourbon, but Rip Kirby always preferred a sharper weapon: pure genius.

Following a first look at San Diego Comic-Con, Mad Cave Studios and King Features have officially unveiled the return of comic history’s most sophisticated sleuth. Rip Kirby is back in an all-new comic series that pays homage to the brainpower, wit, and timeless elegance that made the character an icon.

Spearheading the revival is two-time Eisner Award nominee Christopher Sebela (High Crimes, Dead Letters). Tango (Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, Archie Horror) is the artist behind it. They are joined by colorist KJ Diaz and letterer Jeff Eckleberry. Together, the team is crafting a fresh mystery built on one of the most enduring foundations in the medium.

Brains Over Brawn

Created in 1946 by Alex Raymond and Ward Greene, Rip Kirby broke the mold for mid-century crime fiction. Instead of bashing heads in dark alleyways, Kirby solved cases using scientific reasoning. As well as keen observation and sheer intellect, leaving an indelible mark on syndicate newspaper strips for generations.

He’s a decorated war hero, a star athlete, a brilliant scientist, and a savvy private eye. These days, Rip is riding high on the post-war boom of mid-century New York City. With his quick-witted partner Honey Dorian at his side and his reformed-con-turned-valet Desmond keeping the household running, life is virtually perfect.

Naturally, that means it’s all about to unravel.

Rip’s cozy world is about to collide with a rapidly changing, increasingly cynical city. Up against modern corruption and shifting loyalties, can a man of morals and fair play stay true to himself, or will the urban grime finally swallow him whole?

How to Catch the Case

The debut issue hits comic shop shelves on November 4, 2026 (with a Final Order Cutoff on October 12).

Rip Kirby #1 will launch with a flagship Cover A by Annie Wu, accompanied by multiple variant covers, a foil edition, and a blank sketch cover for collectors looking to snag a custom piece of noir art.

Put on your tailored suit and dust off the microscope—comic fiction’s suave mastermind is officially back on the case.
