Nick Cutter’s Horror Novel ‘The Troop’ To Be Adapted for a Feature Film

After years of lingering in development limbo, Nick Cutter’s stomach-churning 2014 novel The Troop is finally marching toward the big screen.

Paramount Primal has officially acquired the rights to adapt the fan-favorite horror book. They have tapped screenwriter Chris Basler to bring the visceral, parasite-laden story to life. Horror maestro James Wan previously optioned the project through Atomic Monster. However, Paramount Primal is now steering the long-awaited feature.

Scout Trips and Biological Terrors

The story follows Scoutmaster Tim Riggs and a small group of young scouts. They are on an annual wilderness camping trip to the isolated Falstaff Island off the coast of Prince Edward Island. What should be a weekend of campfire stories and basic survival skills rapidly devolves into absolute carnage. A ravenous intruder stumbles onto their campsite. Carrying a bio-engineered, flesh-devouring parasite, the stranger unleashes the contagion.  Suddenly, the quiet retreat turns into a claustrophobic biological war. The troop is forced to battle both an unnatural horror and their own deteriorating humanity.

Stephen King’s Blessing and a Cult Legacy

First published in February 2014 by Gallery Books, The Troop, written by Canadian author Craig Davidson under the pseudonym Nick Cutter, became an instant classic in modern horror literature. The book earned the 2015 James Herbert Award for Horror Writing. It famously received high praise from Stephen King, who lauded its relentless pacing and skin-crawling atmosphere.

Part of the novel’s lingering dread stems from its clever structural framing, which weaves the island nightmare with fictionalized news reports, audio transcripts, and military cover-up documents that reveal a sinister government conspiracy behind the outbreak.
