Summer always brings heat, humidity, and a fresh wave of shark movies (not that we’re complaining). This year is no different, and the “sharkfest” is only just beginning. Kathryn Newton leads the charge in the latest aquatic survival thriller, Devil’s Mouth. The MPA has officially handed the film a PG-13 rating. Expect plenty of violent content, bloody images, and some suggestive material.
A Very Bad Day at the Beach
Lana Condor joins Newton as a college friend on a trip to Thailand. Their dream vacation turns into a claustrophobic nightmare in an underwater cave system. A hungry bull shark decides to join the party, trapping them deep below the surface. Old tensions and power struggles resurface as the oxygen begins to fade. Surviving the shark might be easier than surviving each other.
The Creative Crew
Jeff Wadlow directs from a script by Aja Gabel and Myung Joh Wesner. Amazon, MGM Studios, and Lionsgate are teaming up to co-produce the project. Wadlow also produces alongside the heavy hitters at Thunder Road Films. These are the same minds behind the John Wick and Sicario franchises.
Shark Facts
Here’s what you need to know about bull sharks. First, they bite more people every year than great whites. There’s something else that makes them extremely dangerous. Unlike great whites, bull sharks can live in either salt or fresh water, allowing them to hunt in rivers and lakes. In the US, one shark was found in the Mississippi River, 1,160 miles inland from the Gulf of Mexico. They prefer murky waist-deep water. So, if you’re in the water, there’s a chance they are too. Pay attention to your surroundings, unless you don’t mind being a shark’s next meal.
Newton’s Busy Schedule
Kathryn Newton is becoming a permanent fixture in our cinematic nightmares. Following her recent role in Ready or Not 2: Here I Come, and in the upcoming movies Avengers: Doomsday, White Elephant, and Hot Year, she’s everywhere.
Coming Soon
With an official rating secured, a trailer and release date should surface soon. Keep your eyes on the horizon for more toothy updates. The shark movie season is officially in high gear. So, stay out of the water and stay tuned for more.
