1999’s The Blair Witch Project was a massive indie phenom, bringing in over $248 million on a budget of under $60,000. It had a ton of people convinced it was a documentary about real missing people in one of the most impressive viral campaigns ever.
Lionsgate is now reviving the Blair Witch Project franchise. They are partnering with Blumhouse and Atomic Monster. Dylan Clark will direct the new installment. Is it a sequel, remake, or reboot? Original star Michael C. Williams, who is executive producing the new film, says it is NOT a remake. He teased on social media that the Witch is back (see post below). Williams and Joshua Leonard will serve as executive producers.
More Originals Join the Fray
The original film team is also returning. Eduardo Sánchez, Daniel Myrick, and Gregg Hale are executive producers. They aim to bring the franchise mythology to a new generation.
Chris Devlin wrote the original script. Dylan Clark is now handling the rewrite. Clark is a rising star in YouTube horror. He is also adapting his short Portrait of God for Universal. Sam Raimi and Jordan Peele are producing that project. Horror heavy hitters have signed on for the new Blair Witch installment, including James Wan, Jason Blum, and Roy Lee, who will also produce.
Nothin’ but gratitude. Oh, yeah, it’s not a ‘remake’. You just wait. The Witch is back… https://t.co/6K8CfBifJI

The Original
Set in 1994, it follows three student filmmakers as they hike into the Black Hills Forest near Burkittsville, Maryland. They aim to shoot a documentary about the local “Blair Witch” legend. The trio quickly loses its way. They find strange stick figures and piles of rocks outside their tents. As the days pass, their equipment malfunctions and their sanity begins to fray. Something unseen stalks them every night. Eventually, they discover a decaying, abandoned house deep in the woods. However, after they enter, none of them is ever seen again. Their footage was found one year later.
