If you thought the giant, vengeful shark from 2023’s hit The Black Demon was satisfied after terrorizing an oil rig, think again. The beast is back. And this time, it has upgraded to a floating maximum-security prison in The Black Demon 2: Atlantis.

Highland Film Group has announced a massive wave of international distribution deals for the upcoming survival action-thriller. With production currently underway in Colombia, the world is clearly hungry for more shark chaos.

‘Prison Break’ Meets ‘Jaws’

The sequel trades the open ocean for Atlantis, a remote, offshore maximum-security fortress in the Pacific. Undercover DEA agent Jerry Simms (Jack Kesy) arrives at the prison to investigate the mysterious disappearance of his partner. What he finds is a complete nightmare soup. The facility is run by the iron-fisted warden (Vanesa Restrepo). However, things worsen as the cell blocks are terrorized by Diego Núñez (Harold Torres). Diego is a cult-like killer. To top it off, he’s rumored to possess ancient, supernatural powers. Just as the prison spirals into a full-blown riot, the legendary Black Demon decides to crash the party. To survive both the inmates and the ocean’s apex predator, Jerry is forced to team up with Chato (Julio César Cedillo), a haunted inmate who knows the prison’s darkest secrets.

A High-Caliber Cast of Professional Badasses

You might come for the shark, but you’ll stay for a cast that knows exactly how to handle high-stakes tension. Kesy (Hellboy: The Crooked Man, Deadpool 2) stars alongside Cedillo (Sicario), Torres (Silent Night), Resterpo (The Surrogacy), and Anthony Del Negro (Barracuda).

Behind the Lens: A Visual Upgrade

Taking over the director’s chair is acclaimed director Carmen Cabana (Resident Evil, Ms. Marvel, Narcos). Cabana, who also co-wrote the script alongside Aaron Benjamin and returning writer Boise Esquerra, is expected to bring a slick, high-octane visual style to the creature feature.

To ensure the action hurts in all the right ways, the production has tapped Burning Bull—the stunt team behind Ang Lee’s Gemini Man and Amazon’s “Jack Ryan.” The film was shot on location in Colombia.

A Global Feeding Frenzy

Following the original film’s success—which secured the #1 streaming spot on Amazon for seven straight days back in 2023—international buyers fought hard for the sequel. Highland Film Group has successfully sold out nearly every major territory, including Vertigo in the US and Canada.

“The beast is back and ready for more!” says Highland Film Group CEO Arianne Fraser. “With the help of our terrific international partners, we look forward to introducing this sensational new installment to audiences around the world.”

The film joins a shiver of other shark movies swimming your way. If you wish to dive back into the original while you wait for The Black Demon 2: Atlantis, you can find it streaming on Prime Video. It starred Josh Lucas as an oil rig inspector who, along with his family, gets put on the menu.
