It is turning out to be a truly spectacular year for cinephiles. If you thought modern horror movies were testing your limits, the granddaddy of theatrical trauma is returning to the big screen to show the new kids how it’s done.

The saintly lunatics at Grindhouse Releasing are bringing Ruggero Deodato’s legendary, ultra-notorious faux-documentary Cannibal Holocaust to theaters nationwide. Yes, you heard that right. And get this, it’s a brand-new, fully uncensored 4K restoration presented in its native 16mm. It’s the crispest, cleanest, and most agonizingly detailed look at the stomach-turning film you will ever get.

The Movie So Realistic, the Director Got Arrested

For the uninitiated or the blissfully unaware, the 1980 classic follows four arrogant young documentary filmmakers who head deep into the Amazon rainforest, only to suffer a brutal death at the hands of an indigenous tribe who decide they’re what’s for dinner.

The movie was so ahead of its time with its format that Deodato was famously arrested for murder shortly after its premiere. Italian authorities genuinely believed he had made a real snuff film. Deodato literally had to drag his very much alive, very smiling actors into a courtroom to prove to a judge that he hadn’t actually fed them to cannibals.

While it remains heavily banned in several countries for its graphic violence and genuine animal cruelty, it is also fiercely defended as a brilliant critique of media sensationalism and the absolute godfather of the 21st-century found-footage boom. Without this movie, we would have never had The Blair Witch Project and Paranormal Activity.

The Restoration

Academy Award-winning film editor and Grindhouse Releasing owner Bob Murawski (The Hurt Locker) spearheaded the grueling restoration process. The project actually had its world premiere at Beyond Fest last year, and Murawski promises that the alternating aspect ratios elevate the film into an entirely new artistic beast:

“It’s a whole new and perhaps even more powerful experience watching the movie this way, with the alternating aspect ratios… This is essentially the same way we constructed Orson Welles’ long-unfinished masterpiece The Other Side of the Wind.”

Comparing one of the most reviled exploitation movies in history to Orson Welles? That is the kind of unhinged cinematic energy we live for.

A Summer of Fleshy Double Features

The nationwide rollout of Cannibal Holocaust kicks off this Friday, May 29, 2026, starting with a sneak preview at the Alamo Drafthouse in St. Louis, Missouri. If watching people get turned into human barbecue in 4K whets your appetite, this is for you. Grab your theater tickets for this Friday, keep an eye out for the upcoming 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray physical drop, and whatever you do… do not order the theater nachos. And for the love of God, leave your kids at home!

Here’s a look back at the original trailer.
