A classic figure of Slavic folklore is getting a dark, modern transformation. AMC+ has officially set a premiere date for “Yaga.” The eight-episode, half-hour series reimagines the ancient myth of Baba Yaga through the lens of a contemporary small-town mystery. Fans of folk horror and atmospheric detective dramas will want to tune in when the series premieres this October. It kicks off with a special two-episode premiere on AMC+.
A Missing Heir and Ancient Magic
Set against the eerie backdrop of a small coastal town, the story begins when private investigator Rapp (Noah Reid) arrives. He has come to investigate the disappearance of Henry Park (Hudson Williams), the young heir to a powerful local fishery. However, Rapp’s investigation quickly hits resistance as he clashes with Carson, a local detective (Clark Backo). The case leads Rapp into a labyrinth of secret lives, enigmatic suspects, and whispers of ancient magic. Katherine, a charismatic university professor with a taste for younger men, anchors it, played by Carrie-Anne Moss.
A Stacked Ensemble of Genre Favorites
Based on the hit play by showrunner and writer Kat Sandler, the series boasts an impressive ensemble cast. Alongside Reid, Moss, Williams, and Backo, the show stars Sheila McCarthy, Megan Follows, Ezra Franky, and Patrick Gilmore. Katharine Isabelle, Hiro Kanagawa, Emilija Baranac, Georgia Acken, Anisa Harris, and Sam Krochmal round out the cast.
The History of Baba Yaga
Rooted in pre-Christian Slavic mythology, Baba Yaga is a morally ambiguous forest entity. She, however, functions as both a terrifying antagonist and an improbable benefactor. Her name pairs the East Slavic word for grandmother with an ancient root signifying horror or distress.
She is legendary for traveling through the air. She rides a giant stone mortar, steering with a pestle while using a birch broom to sweep away her tracks. Deep in the forest, she dwells inside a mystical cabin that walks on giant chicken legs. A fence topped with glowing human skulls surrounds the home.
While infamous for threatening to consume lost travelers, she also rewards the brave and clever with powerful magic. From 19th-century folk collections to modern cinematic adaptations, she endures as the ultimate symbol of untamed, unpredictable power.
Acclaimed Directors Behind the Camera
An experienced directing duo brings this atmospheric blend of coastal noir and supernatural folklore to the screen. David Frazee (Chapelwaite, Reginald the Vampire) and genre veteran Rachel Talalay (Riverdale, A Babysitter’s Guide to Monster Hunting) co-direct the series. However, with a talented cast and an eerie premise, “Yaga” promises a uniquely haunting mystery. It debuts its first two episodes on October 23.
