If you thought the team behind The Caged (also known as The Coven) was resting on its laurels after riding the blood-soaked wave of Terrifier 2 and 3, think again. The genre powerhouse is rolling into the Cannes Market with a dual threat. Not only are they shopping the highly anticipated, internet-meme-inspired thriller Man or Bear, they’ve also quietly locked down the global release of a folk-horror nightmare based on one of the most aggressively haunted houses in British history.
The Caged, directed by the award-winning Jeffrey Scott Collins, has already conjured up major territory deals ahead of its market debut, and the real-world history behind it is enough to make any physical media collector lock their doors.
The Real-World Cellblock from Hell
The film draws its terrifying supernatural folklore directly from a very real, very grim piece of UK real estate. It’s known as “The Cage.” Located in St. Osyth, Essex, the medieval structure served as a notorious 16th-century prison. It’s a place where local women were chained, tortured, and starved. That’s before they were executed during the infamous St. Osyth witch trials of 1582.
Unlike most historical horror backdrops, this place is still standing, and its modern history is just as unhinged as its past:
The cottage has been the subject of multiple investigative documentaries, including high-profile coverage by the BBC. In fact, a former owner famously wrote a book detailing how she was violently forced out of the home by aggressive supernatural entities while she was pregnant.
Actual paranormal investigators eventually bought the property. They widely consider it one of the most active, haunted hot spots in England.
A Cast with Serious Genre Pedigree
To ground a historical nightmare that shifts between period-accurate dread and modern supernatural chaos, Collins has assembled an elite tier of British and international talent.
Tamzin Merchant, the veteran of “The Tudors” and “Carnival Row,” brings her signature dramatic weight to the center of the coven. Edmund Kingsley is fresh off high-profile stints in The Witcher and “Slow Horses.”
Raffiella Chapman, the captivating young breakout star from the sci-fi indie masterpiece Vesper and Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, also stars.
The Cannes Feeding Frenzy
The Caged is proving to be absolute catnip for international distributors looking for the next breakout horror hit. The Caged has already closed a massive web of distribution deals across major global territories.
With Man or Bear capturing the attention of the midnight crowd and The Caged locking down the historical folk-horror demographic, the sales team is poised to dominate the Croisette this month. As soon as the release date is announced, we’ll let you know. In the meantime, check out the first trailer.
